South West Netball Volunteers – Making a difference through Netball

South West volunteers Jenny Kelly, Lili John and Katrina Venner travelled to Uganda on 26^th July, with 9 other volunteers working with the Netball Development Trust. Jenny and Katrina were part of the group which traveled to Bungoma in Kenya and Lili went with the other half of the group to Fort Portal in Uganda.

Each group spent a week delivering netball to local primary schools culminating in a tournament on the Friday. The Kenya group also delivered sanitary pads to schools who are part of the programme, the Fort Portal group delivered training to local volunteers so they can continue to deliver netball in the community. The groups then reconvened in Jinja, Uganda for the second week, delivering to rural schools in the morning and city schools in the afternoon with a tournament at the end of the week.

Alongside this they delivered sessions on menstrual health awareness with local charity X-SUBA. The final few days were in a suburb of Kampala called Mukono, there they worked with local partner organisation Kip Livin On. They visited schools to deliver fun netball sessions, delivered a menstrual health session and ran a tournament. Throughout the week they were accompanied by young volunteers and local coaches who learned a lot from working with the group.

Over 23 days, 4 countries, 1000 children coached and 30+ local volunteers trained, they never stopped smiling.
