#wedNEWSday – Pre-Season Tournament was a hit

Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles. Make sure you check out our website each week to keep up to date and if you have a great story let us know using the details below!

This year’s preseason NSW Regional League tournament, played at Exeter University, was bigger than ever with 20 teams entered from across the four divisions, including six teams from the most recently formed of the divisions, Div 3 South.

Although billed as a friendly tournament the short-form matches were very competitive. Two of the quarter final matches had to be decided on golden goal after finishing level at the final whistle – Galmington beat Titans Thunder 10-9 and Saints managed to just hold off Premier Romans by 16-15.

The format of the day’s play was almost as complicated as the new Nations Cup in football – the first stage was a round-robin with teams playing each other in their groups of five.  The top two in each group then proceeded to the quarter finals. From this stage on each losing team went into a play-off for position. The 3rd, 4th and 5th placed in the round robin stages then re-formed into groups to play each other to determine the positions 9-12,13-16 and 17-20.

The 3rd/4th play-offs between the losing semi-finalists resulted in a win for Galmington from Div 1, who held off Saints from Div 3S by just two goals.

The final saw a very strong Exeter A squad hold off a determined effort from a young Hucclecote Stars side and finish the day as champions.

This year we were pleased to announce that there was something left over in the pot to reward the first three teams with a modest financial subsidy.  Next season we are considering sponsorship so if you know of anyone interested or a company who would like to be partnered with this event please contact the Regional Office.

Thanks must go to Team White (the umpires) who were magnificent as always and filled the breach when two of the umpires picked up injuries. We wish them a speedy recovery!

Each week we will be updating you on a good news story from the South West as part of our new wedNEWSday articles. If you have a good news story that you would like to share please send your story and a picture to Laura Woodruff (southwest@englandnetball.co.uk)
