#wedNEWSday – WI Walking Netball partnership making BIG steps across the South West…

Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles. Make sure you check out our website each week to keep up to date and if you have a great story let us know using the details below!

In January 2018, England Netball announced a national partnership with the Women’s Institute, which outlined their commitment to get WI ladies right across the country back on court through their Walking Netball programme.

The team of Netball Development Officers across the South West have been out and about building relationships and making plans with identified WIs and the first several cohorts of WIs taking court have certainly paved the way for others to follow in their footsteps – with sessions in Devon and Gloucestershire seeing over 30 ladies attend!

With taster sessions and regular sessions having taken place in nearly every county, the interest in Walking Netball amongst the South West WI’s seems to be growing (it’s estimated that nearly 200 WI members have gotten a wiggle on so far!). This week’s WedNEWSday throws the spotlight on Wellington WI in Somerset – who recently featured in their local gazette!

Having heard lots of positive feedback from other WIs in the area, Wellington WI invited newly appointed Somerset Netball Development Officer, Sammy Kemmish, to one of their regular meetings to give them an insight into the Walking Netball programme and show them what it’s all before taking court themselves at a planned taster session set for the following week (VIDEO: What is Walking Netball?)

Inspired by Sammy’s visit, 20 ladies came to the taster session which saw many of them touch a netball for the first time in over 50 years! Wellington WI committee member, Caroline Swann, said “Walking Netball is an ideal activity for our members as it offers a fun way of getting active that will suit all of our members, whatever their age/level of activity.”

“Netball is something that most of us have played before and it became apparent at the session the ladies had not forgotten how to play!   As it’s an all-inclusive activity we had a very positive response and the session went down very well – lots of laughter and reminiscing about “School Netball” – we can’t wait to get started in September!”

With demand high and the Wellington WI boasting over 80 members, the ladies are not only looking forward to setting up a weekly session from September (which they will be leading themselves, having trained up members via England Netball’s host training workshop), but are even considering putting on 2 sessions each week to ensure members from all backgrounds (and will all kinds of commitments) are able to access Walking Netball.

England Netball have been inundated with requests from WIs to become a part of this programme, but still welcome other interested groups to make themselves aware to their local Netball Development Officer or the South West regional office to see how we can include you in the delivery plan.

Not part of a WI but still keen to give Walking Netball a go? We have lots of Walking Netball sessions open to women of all ages running right across the South West (and have more in the pipeline!) – so get in touch and get back on court!

Inspired to start your own Walking Netball group? We have Walking Netball Host training taking place in Bristol this October which will equip you with all the knowledge / tools you need to start your own session! No need to be a netball expert – we support you the whole way! Contact southwest@englandnetball.co.uk for full details.

#wedNEWSday – Camp diary: Bath Netball Youth Camp

Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles. Make sure you check out our website each week to keep up to date and if you have a great story let us know using the details below!

Please note: technical issues have stopped us uploading all of our photos to this story today – we will add some when resolved!!

The summer holidays have well and truly been kicked off in style in Bath, following a 3 day Netball Youth Camp which saw 28 young netballers take court in a whole host of activities and get some fantastic tips from England and Team Bath superstar, Paige Reed. Below we hear from Emily Harrison (Avon & Wiltshire NDO) who gives us a sneak peek into what sounds like 3 days of netball madness…

Now in it’s 4th year, the Bath Netball Youth Camp, that ran between 25th-27th July at King Edwards School in Bath, was set to be the best yet, with great weather forecast and lots of fun things planned, the coaches and I were really excited to get going!

Day 1 saw the players begin to get to know one another with balloon netball bingo, before being taken through challenging ball skills and working on attacking options with welcome visitor Paige Reed. Paige’s visit was wrapped up with some excellent questions from the girls – from asking about Paige’s pathway in netball through to what she would want to do if she wasn’t a netballer (a surgeon for those who are interested!!). The afternoon was jam packed with specialist sessions on shooting (delivered by assistant coach Sian) and attacking the circle edge (delivered by lead coach Nic), before finishing with some seriously impressive match play!

Day 2 began with some recovery in the form of yoga – it turned out we had some seriously flexible netballers on the camp…and some not so flexible coaches!! The theme of Day 2 was defence – so after some more ball handling challenges (inc skipping & crazy catches), the girls were taken through various sessions throughout the day that looked at footwork patterns, interception technique, zoning and a laughter filled man on man session accompanied by emojis!! Over lunch, the girls’ imagination and artistic skills were tapped in to as they were challenged to design a netball dress – from which 3 winners were chosen we coaches simply couldn’t agree!

With the weather so great, Day 2 finished with match play outside…but with a summer twist…water pistol umpires – apparently a great way to add pressure to decision making and shooting technique!!

Day 3 was met with some tired looking netballers (and coaches) coming through the door…but after it was revealed that the final day of the camp would be one big competition, the excitement of the previous 2 days was back! The players were split into 3 teams (England, Australia & Jamaica) and led by their coach were taken through a number of different team and individual challenges were they earnt points for their team…the afternoon laid way to team chants and a tournament…before the water pistols were back…at which point the heat began to have an affect and the camp finished with a full blown water fight!!

After 3 busy days, the coaches waved off 28 happy, tired (and slightly soggy) netballers…and guess what? We’re already looking forward to next year!

Check out photos from the camp on the Netball in Avon facebook page: www.facebook.com/NetballinAvon

This summer we have 2 more Netball Youth Camps set to run in the South West – both of which are still accepting bookings, so don’t miss out on what really is an unmissable holiday activity for any netball keen bean!
