St Peter’s soar to Second Place at Nationals

On Saturday schools from the South West made the trip to Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire for the U14 National Finals.

St Peters High School (Exeter, Devon) did exceptionally well and lost by 1 goal in the Under 14 Final, so congratulations to you on your achievement.

A big thank you and well done to the Southwest umpires who made the trip to support the tournament and did really well in arctic conditions.  Claire, Nicky and Debbie all got to umpire the Semi Finals, Julia got an U19 ¾ play-off final, with Jenna and Lou umpiring the U14 final.

A massive thank you to all the umpires, teachers, parents and players who supported this fantastic event.

Mo Squires: Torch Trophy Trust Award 2018

Following our recent #wedNEWSday article we are delighted to congratulate Mo Squires on being awarded ‘Volunteer of the Year’ at the recent Torch Trophy Trust Awards that took place at the Army and Navy Club in London on Wednesday 7th February.

Mo had been invited to the event to receive recognition for her continued hard work and dedication to netball. More specifically cited was Mo’s contribution to the development and delivery of Walking Netball (both locally and nationally) and to her commitment to the Swindon Vixens – a specific netball club designed to engage and support young women with learning disabilities to access netball.

In addition to this recognition, Mo was chosen from 20 exceptional volunteers across a whole range of sports to win the overall award for volunteering in sport.

With her citation read by Sir Trevor Brooking and receiving her award from the Duke of Gloucester – Mo’s years of service to Netball were rightly honoured.

Mo was totally shocked after being awarded the overall award, “Recognition doesn’t come easily to me. There are many thousand volunteers giving hundreds of thousands of hours each year to sporting organisations throughout the UK. Without these volunteers I think many sports would struggle to survive let alone develop and prosper.”

Despite openly admitting that being recognised at these events was not ‘her thing’, Mo confidentally chatted with pride to other award winners and celebrities and true to form Mo didn’t let a fundraising opportunity go by and left the event clutching two signed netballs – Sir Trevor Brooking and Sir Bobby Charlton – for her yet another netball fundraiser later on this year.

A truly exceptional netballer.

Netball South West would once again like to congratulate Mo on deservedly being recognised at this prestigious event and thank her for her continued commitment to netball in our region!

#wedNEWSday: Gilly Salter presented Honary Life Membership at South West Superleague thriller

Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles. Make sure you check out our website each week to keep up to date and if you have a great story let us know using the details below!

Monday 26th February 2018, not only saw an incredibly close clash between local South West Superleague rivals, Team Bath and Severn Stars, but fittingly it also saw former Netball South West President, Gilly Salter, presented with her England Netball Honary Life Member award.

Gilly has made a huge impact on netball in both the South West and Nationally, not only representing England as a player, but also having been head coach at Hucclecote NC since 1988 and a regional scout since 1999. Gilly continues to support the growth of netball and has more recently been at the forefront of Walking Netball delivery in Gloucestershire, supporting ladies to rediscover their love for our sport after years away from the court.

It was amongst some of these Walking Netballers and a number of the netball family from Gloucestershire that Gilly was presented her award by Anita Navin in the VIP area of the Superleague event on Monday evening. Alongside this, Gilly was also asked to present the Player of the Match Award following the ‘edge of your seat’ match which saw visitors, Team Bath, win by just 1 goal (48-47)

Netball South West are incredibly proud of all that Gilly has achieved and continues to achieve for the local and wider world of netball.

#wedNEWSday: Another well deserved accolade for volunteer Mo Squires

Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles. Make sure you check out our website each week to keep up to date and if you have a great story let us know using the details below!

Following her success at the most recent Goalden Globe Awards, we are pleased to share that Wiltshire based Mo Squires has since been been nominated for a Torch Trophy Trust award and will be attending the award ceremony in London next month.

The Torch Trophy Trust is a charity that rewards, recognises and supports volunteers in sport and recreation and in particular aims to identify and honour sporting volunteers who ordinarily would neither gain or seek recognition for their work with sports clubs and individual athletes in their local communities.

Mo has been nominated by England Netball President, Lindsay Satori, to receive an award for ‘her outstanding voluntary work for England Netball’ and specifically for her involvement in the development and delivery of Walking Netball.

Mo has fondly been named as the ‘founder’ of Walking Netball and has been a strong advocate of the game and its benefits. As one of the first Walking Netball hosts, Mo led the launch of the game in Swindon and Wiltshire, and has ensured that it continues to go from strength to strength – she now oversees 6 sessions running each week in Swindon and also built a relationship with Wiltshire Council who now deliver 5 sessions right across the County too. Alongside local delivery, Mo has been a continued and valued support to the wider delivery of the game – including providing access to sessions for coverage on BBC Radio 4 and Sky Sports.

On receiving the nomination, Mo commented, “There are only 20 people across the country and across all sports nominated each year, so to receive an award like this is an honour”.

Mo will join other nominees at an event in Pall Mall next month, which will also be attended by the Trust’s President, Sir Bobby Charlton and a member of the Royal Family.

Best of luck, Mo! This nomination is thoroughly deserved.

#wedNEWSday: Performance Athletes put their skills to the test in South West Match Play Day

Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles. Make sure you check out our website each week to keep up to date and if you have a great story let us know using the details below!

Performance Athletes put their skills to the test in South West Match Play Day

There was no half term break for over 90 performance pathway netballers, who came together to play one another in a match play day in Bristol at the weekend (10th February 2017).

Hosted by Avon Netball Association at Clifton College, Counties were invited to enter teams in both Satellite Academy (U14) and County Academy (U16) competitions, aimed at providing the young players the opportunity to play their peers from other counties and to put in to practice what they have been learning at their respective academies.

The 13 teams (from Avon, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire) were all made up of netballers who are currently part of the Performance Pathway Academies in their respective county, and as such, the standard of netball on show was very high.

The County Academy (U16) competition, made up of 5 teams, played a round robin competition that saw Avon 1 named as winners, winning all of their games throughout the event.

Winners of the County Academy competition: Avon 1

Final standings for County Academy competition:

Avon 1

Wiltshire 1

Avon 2

Wiltshire 2

Gloucestershire 1

Alongside the County competition, the Satellite Academy (U14) competition saw 8 teams (divided into 2 pools) play one another to qualify for play off games at the end of the day.

Satellite Academy (U14) competition winners: Dorset 1

An incredibly close 1st and 2nd play off game between Avon 3 and Dorset 1, very nearly went to extra time, but Dorset 1 kept hold of the game to win the match (and the competition) by 2.

Satellite Academy (U14) Runners Up: Avon 3

Final standings for County Academy competition:

Dorset 1

Avon 3

Glos 3

Glos 4

Avon 5

Avon 6

Wiltshire 4

Wiltshire 3

Avon Netball would like to thank all the coaches, volunteers and parents who supported the young players in attending the event. A huge thanks also goes to the umpires who oversaw the games and the umpire mentors who took time to support the developing umpires also in attendance.

#wedNEWSday: South West round of National Schools competition

Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles. Make sure you check out our website each week to keep up to date and if you have a great story let us know using the details below!

Rain doesn’t stop play at the South West round of the National Schools competition

On what must have been the wettest Saturday of the winter, Netball South West held the regional schools’ finals at the Sir David English Sports Centre in Bournemouth on 27th January. Despite the weather, the newly refurbished courts held up well, and some exciting netball was seen by hundreds of spectators who braved the elements to support their school teams.

Teams taking part were representing Avon, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire

Forty two teams, across three age groups (U14, U16 and U19), took court to battle it out for the two qualifying places up for grabs in each age group. With teams taking part having qualified as winners or runners up from their respective county finals, the standard of this year’s competition was as high as ever.

The winners and runners-up in each age group (detailed below), will now qualify to represent the South West Region at the National finals:

Under 14

St Peters School, Devon

Taunton School, Somerset

Under 16

Canford School, Dorset

Marlborough College, Wiltshire

Under 19

Exeter College, Devon

Hartpury College, Gloucestershire

The event was supported by a team of 29 umpires, alongside court managers and umpire mentors led by Judith Groves (ex-International Umpire) and Janice Treasure (A award umpire). We are grateful to all for their efforts on a particularly challenging day.

The Umpire of the Tournament award went to Claire Daly, with Dan Racey as the Most Promising Umpire, both from Wiltshire.

Young Volunteers from Blandford School kept the event running smoothly

Karen Jones, NSW Regional Chair, thanked the Schools organising group of Pam Telford, Danny Neill, Pat Salter, Steve Richmond, and Les Thomas for all their hard work in organising and managing the event, with additional help from Linda Dyer and Sylvie Neill on the day.

We wish the qualifying schools good luck at the National finals which will be held on Saturday 17th March in Welwyn Garden City (Hertfordshire).
