#wedNEWSday – Lili John is ‘Walking this Way’

Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles.

Early this year Lili John contacted the Devon Community Foundation (http://devoncf.com) as she was looking for funding to run walking netball sessions in Kingsbridge. When they heard about why she wanted the money, they were keen to help and they encouraged Lili to think bigger and offer her services to a wider group of people. And so, Lili’s Social Entrepreneur project ‘Walk This Way’ came into being.

In the summer Lili was awarded money by UnLtd (https://www.unltd.org.uk/our-work/our-focus-areas/solutions-for-an-ageing-society) from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation Fund. The Grant was given to set up Walking Netball Programmes in 3 x areas in South Devon over a 12 month period. The Walking Netball Programmes are not just about the sport of netball, they have wider community goals and are seen as ways to engage with older people and keep them active in their community.

The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation aims to improve the quality of life for people and communities throughout the UK both now and in the future. They do this by funding the charitable work of organisations that are building an inclusive, creative and sustainable society.  https://www.esmeefairbairn.org.uk

Lili is currently working through everything and already has one scheme up and running in Kingsbridge, bright and early on Sunday mornings at Quayside Leisure Centre from 9 am until 10 am. There will be a new programme in Newton Abbot starting in November, starting from tomorrow (1st November) at Teign School in Kingsteignton between 6 pm and 7 pm. The third set of sessions will beginning in Totnes in January 2019.

Lili is such an inspiration to the community and raising the profile of walking netball in the South West. She has even been invited to UnLtd’s event which celebrates Social Entrepreneurs who are making a difference in an ageing society being held in Birmingham in November. We hope you enjoy the event and keep up the great work!

Each week we will be updating you on a good news story from the South West as part of our new wedNEWSday articles. If you have a good news story that you would like to share please send your story and a picture to Laura Woodruff (southwest@englandnetball.co.uk)
