On Saturday 9th June, Raychem Netball Club hosted their 5th Squires Charity Netball Tournament at Dorcan Recreation Complex. Mo Squires is the Chair and founder of Raychem Netball Club and in 2013 wanted to do something in memory of her parents. The Squires tournament was born, and the first year raised money for The Prospect Hospice.
Since 2013 the Squires Tournaments have raised over £20,000 for different charities. Each year the Club choose a charity that is close to their hearts and this year it was an easy choice.
In 2017 one of Raychem’s players, Dawn Greenberg gave birth to a little girl, Emmie. Emmie was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), where in basic terms her heart was plumbed wrong, with her aorta and pulmonary arteries being the wrong way around. Emmie was taken to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Bristol Children’s Hospital a few hours after birth. In total she was there 4 months, 3 of these on life support. The staff in PICU saved her life and Dawn and her family will always be grateful to them.
The tournament attracted 35 junior teams from across the UK and even had two teams travel from Jersey to take part. This is a massive tournament to organise and can only be achieved with the fantastic help of staff at Dorcan Recreation Complex & Dorcan Academy together with members of Raychem NC and the Swindon Netball Community. Over 30 volunteers made this a huge success.
Dawn and her partner Gareth also organised a mixed netball tournament in May of this year (with help from Raychem NC members) and raised £1900 for the charity and the Squires tournament raised a whopping £3546 which means a total of £5446 will be donated by Dawn and Gareth to the charity.
The winners of the tournaments were:
U12 Winners: Swan Coral (Southampton) Runners Up: Newbury Blue
U14 Winners: Lawn (Swindon) Runners Up: Warriors (Devon)
U16 Winners: Raychem Roses (Swindon) Runners Up: Swan Pearls (Southampton)
The tournament attracted some great sponsorship from local companies, sponsoring courts and supplying food for the BBQ, Raychem would like to say a massive thank you to:
ASAP Delivery, Anything Stone, Wilson Tool, Eames Laurie Financial Services, D Hibbert Plastering, Stanwells, Your Logo, Bobby’s Fish and Chip shop, Helen Browning Chop House and Lovington’s Ice Cream.
