SW volunteers steal the show at National Goalden Globe Awards
The South West volunteers stole the show at the England Netball National Goalden Globe awards on Saturday 16th September, with Mo Squires leading the way scooping 3 awards.
Following on from the Netball South West Regional Goalden Globes held in June the regional winners were put forward for the National Goalden Globe Awards. Volunteers from the South West were awarded and recognised for an amazing 10 accolades throughout the night, including Gilly Salter becoming an England Netball Honorary Life Member.
Lesley Robbins (Avon), from Team Bath NC, won the Mary Bulloch Administrator Award for all of her great work supporting the committee, coaches, umpires and players at Team Bath. The club simply would not function without her support.
The Muriel McNally Award was presented to Katrina Venner (East Devon) for her work mentoring coaches and umpires at her club as well as ensuring the North Devon League runs smoothly.
Francesca Nutt (Avon) was the National Grassroots Coach Award winner. Frankie has provided coaching opportunities and training across Avon, ensuring coaching vacancies are filled and introducing over 130 new players to netball.
Debbie Ashworth (Cornwall) collected the Grassroots Official Award for her outstanding work in developing umpires across the South West. Debbie has developed over 50 new umpires and has drastically improved the quality of umpiring not only in Cornwall but across the region. This is the 3rd year in a row that the Grassroots Official Award has been won by a South West volunteer and demonstrates the excellent standard of officiating we enjoy in the SW.
In addition, Channon Bruton (Dorset) and Amy Tomlin (Wiltshire) were celebrated for their contributions and both received the Pass on Your Passion Award for completing 400 voluntary hours in netball.
England Netball welcomed Gilly Salter as a new Honorary Life Member. Gilly achieved the highest of levels in netball representing England, has been a head coach at Hucclecote NC since 1988 and a national and regional scout since 1999. Gilly, who recently stepped down as NSW President, has had a huge impact on netball in both the South West and Nationally and this achievement is very well deserved.
However the star of the show was Mo Squires. The evening started with Mo collecting the National Long Service Award for her dedication to improving netball. Mo was then presented with the Inclusion and Diversity Award in recognition of her wonderful work as the founder and driving force behind Swindon Vixens NC, an EN Inclusion club providing netball opportunities for women who have learning disabilities. Mo’s hat trick of awards was completed with the National Rose Award. This award is presented to a volunteer who has demonstrated an exceptional contribution to netball in the last 12 months and there is no denying Mo fits this category perfectly. Mo has fondly been named as the ‘founder’ of Walking Netball and has been a strong advocate of the game and its benefits. As one of the first WN hosts, Mo has launched Walking Netball in Swindon and ensured that it continues to go from strength to strength.
Karen Jones, Chair of Netball South West said ‘It is fantastic to see so many of our wonderful volunteers being recognised and celebrated on a national level. Volunteers are crucial to making netball happen at all levels so we are incredibly grateful for the work they have done.’
NSW would like to say a huge congratulations to all of our national Goalden Globe Award winners and to all of the nominees that represented the South West on the evening.
