Saints Netball (Cornwall) on tour!

Saints Netball Club (Cornwall) have recently returned from their third tour to the other side of the world.

17 players signed up and spent two years saving and fund raising for the tour.

The day before leaving our young defender, Beth Gummow, was taken into hospital to have her appendix removed – utter disappointment for her and her squad.

The group flew into Brisbane arriving late at night and the next day it was a trip up to the Sunshine Coast and two days jet lag recovery on Fraser Island. We can recommend the four wheel drive of the island to give you a thrill and introduce you to the beauty of Fraser Island!

Then it was back to the mainland and matches followed thick and fast in Hervey Bay, Noosa and Surfers Paradise. En route there were visits to Australia Zoo and a surfing lesson in Surfers’Paradise.

Next stop was Wauchope a small town inland from Port McQuarrie for games and then off to Sydney for our last matches.

In Sydney we stayed at the YHA on the Rocks overlooking Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge – truly memorable. Unbelievably there was another Netball group in the YHA (from Taunton School!) – the netball world is so small sometimes.

Whilst there we visited Taronga Zoo had a jet boat ride around the harbour and were privileged to have a coaching session with Cath Cox, an Australian Netball Icon.

In all we played five fixtures in ten days. The U15s won all five games and the U17s won three, drew one and lost one.

The competition was great, the players made friends for life with the opposition, who on many occasions hosted them. Everyone has the most amazing memories of what was a wonderful jam packed tour.

So, back to the UK arriving home on August 3rd, ready for the new season and possibly planning for the next one….
