Each week we will bring you a good news story from across the South West on wedNEWSday! Due to some technical issues this week wedNEWSday is late so for one week only, thursNEWSday is here (don’t worry, we will be back to normal next week!)
It’s one big Netball Party
For the third year running, King Edwards School in Bath played host to another successful Netball Youth Camp last week. The sold out camp saw 33 enthusiastic netballers (aged 11-16 years) take to court and take part in sessions focused on attack, ball handling, defending, creating space, through court play and even video analysis and umpiring basics!
Day 1 was all about getting to know one another and team building skills, before cramming in sessions on ball handling, passing and ways to get free – with some seriously good reverse pivots on show! England U21 and Team Bath player, Paige Reed, made an appearance in the afternoon and not only treated the girls to a mini shooting masterclass, but also gave the players a great insight into her netball journey and what she gets up to on/off the court.
After an Aerobics warm up on Day 2, the camp’s focus turned to skills challenges against the clock and defending skills before taking on the Crazy Catches after lunch. The day finished off with a coaches’ and players’ favourite – 3 way bench ball (which is as manic, and awesome, as it sounds!) – even the coaches couldn’t resist joining in, in the last game of the day (much to the parents’ amusement!).
Building on the previous day’s success, Day 3 kicked off with 4 way bench ball (even more fun!) and then moved on to several tactics’ sessions on through court play, creating space and even a video analysis session looking at centre passes and backline passes. Then down to the real business of the day…the camp tournament. After some extremely close matches, final standings where added to the lunch time quiz scores and the “Smurfs” were crowed the 2017 Bath NYC winners!!
A huge thank you goes to this year’s coaching team – Nic Humphrys, Amy Wiltshire and Emily Harrison – who planned/delivered some fantastic sessions. It’s fair to say everyone involved in this year’s camp, both players and coaches, had a brilliant 3 days, learnt a lot and made some great netball friends. We are already counting down the days to Bath NYC 2018!!
